Magnesite works in Jelšava is the greatest mining and manufacturing magnesite plant in Slovakia. Nowadays, it is a property of the Slovak Magnesite Works, joint-stock company, Jelšava and it has gone through over 100 years old history.

On the day of July 2, 1893 at the town council meeting, there was submited an announcement, that „two stones“ which had appeared near the town, were magnesite. Sounder digs survey discovered a large magnesite deposit underneath.

In 1918 the Magnesite Industry, joint-stock company (MPÚS), had signed with the town of Jelšava an addition of the agreement of 21.3.1900 about building-up a manufacturing plant. Building of the plant began in 1921. Total area extension of the plant was 22 hectares. Plant launched its activity on September 16, 1923.

Since 1925 the company Magnesite Industry had been a member of European industry cartel. Since 1994 to 1945 the realisation of the works was stopped. The plant was unmounted and main production facilities were damaged in an explosion.

In 1947 a significant change came about for magnesite producers. At the day of March 15, 1947 by the regulation of Slovak National Council No.7/1947, the magnesite was declared as a reserved mineral. The Magnesite works went under the technical supervision of mining authorities. This state was also enacted by the mining act No.41/1957. Since 1949 in the middle of each September the Jelšava mineworkers have celebrated the Day of Miners.
